P.A.L.S. stands for “Peer and Leadership Support.” It is a program designed to help ease fifth-graders’ transition into middle school through monthly interactions with P.A.L.S. members. Members are eighth grade students who are considered to be positive leaders in the school. These eighth-graders meet weekly to plan lessons that address issues common to middle school, such as peer pressure. They then implement these lessons once a month inside the fifth grade classrooms. Activities range from games, to cooperative learning tasks, to class discussion.

Members of P.A.L.S. go through a rigorous application process at the end of seventh grade. This process includes attending an initial interest meeting, submitting a written application, and being evaluated by their current teachers. All accepted applicants are expected to be positive role models and adhere to an attendance policy.

This year’s P.A.L.S. club includes 43 members.
